Project Completed: 2010
Located on the banks of the Fraser River in the city of Richmond, BC, the Richmond Olympic Oval was first constructed in 2008 as the future home for speed skating events at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Games. A major component of the project was that, unlike other single-use Olympic ice ovals, the city of Richmond wanted to maximize the use of the facility for the community before and after the games. To meet this demand Centaur was contracted to supply and install a Robbins Bio-Channel Classic® hardwood court system in the inner part of the oval, much like the infield of an outdoor track.
The innovation did not stop there however, as following the conclusion of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Oval began work on the Legacy phase of the project. Centaur played a major role in this phase of the project by providing consultation on product selection, supplying and installing sports surfaces as well as providing scoreboards and sports equipment for the facility. This massive undertaking included the supply and installation of 73,000 square feet of spike-proof multi-sport flooring made of Pulastic® SP for the Oval’s Track Zone. The Track Zone at the Oval is the world’s largest continuous Pulastic SP surface and contains 4 FIBA regulation basketball courts, 7 FIVB regulation volleyball courts, 3 FIFA regulation futsal fields, 18 badminton courts, a 200 metre five-lane training track and a 110 metre five-lane sprint track – a unique indoor training element found nowhere else in Canada. In addition to the synthetic sports surfacing, Centaur also supplied and installed over 42,000 square feet hardwood sports flooring (including 6 basketball, 6 volleyball and 14 badminton courts) consisting of Robbins All-Star Plus, Bio-Channel Classic and Bio-Cushion LP Systems. Centaur also supplied and installed rubber flooring for fitness rooms, spectator seating, hockey scoreboards and other related sports equipment for the facility. The Richmond Olympic Oval achieved LEED Silver Status and has received countless awards including being recognized by Athletic Business Magazine as a Facility of Merit for 2010, winner of the Institution of Structural Engineers top award for Sports or Leisure Structures and winner of Robbins Sports Surface of the Year in both 2009 and 2011.
